ActiVin is a powder that is soluble in ethanol and propylene glycol. Therefore,
it can be incorporated into flavors.
The limit of solubility for each solvent is approximately 5%.
To incorporate ActVin into a flavor, we recommend the following protocol:
- Formulate the flavor with a 0.5% or higher usage level. The 0.5% usage level will insure
that there will be sufficient solvent in which to dissolve the ActiVin.
- Solubilize the ActiVin in ethanol or propylene glycol, prior to adding the flavor raw
materials. Heat slightly (50F) and/or agitate to hasten the solubilizing.
- Add flavor chemicals after the ActiVin is solubilized.
Example: Assume our flavor usage level is 0.5% and we are making 100 grams of
flavor. If we want to deliver 50mg/serving (200ppm) into the final beverage then 4 grams
of ActiVin should be solubilized into ethanol or propylene glycol. The appropriate flavor
chemicals should then be added and the total weight of flavor should be 100g. The flavor
is then used at 0.5% in a beverage. The chart below summarizes the calculations for
formulating a flavor with ActiVin.
